JPEG and BMP differences

What is JPEG

  • JPEG is short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, and is the most popular among the image formats used on the web. JPEG losing the some data when it saving.

What is BMP

  • The Windows Bitmap or BMP files are image files within the Microsoft Windows operating system.
  • These files are large and uncompressed, but the images are rich in color, high in quality, simple and compatible in all Windows OS and programs.

Differences between BMP and JPEG

JPEG BMP
Supports millions of colors. Supports millions of colors.
Supported on almost all apps/platforms. Supported on Windows and its apps.
Lossy (visual quality is typically lost upon saving). Lossless (no visual quality is lost).
Uses compression (relatively small file sizes). Does not use compression (large file sizes).
Does not support alpha transparency. Does not support transparency features.
Does not support animation features. Does not support animation features.
Commonly used for photos. Commonly as a simple graphics file format on Microsoft Windows platform.
